Have you heard the news? You don't want to miss this! The Fraunhofer-Business Area Cleaning is excited about new publications from our members Linda Steinhäußer and Gaby Gotzmann. Together, they are exploring the potential of plasma-treated liquids (PTL). You can find the surprising discoveries and the links to the publications here.

a.     Academic Article in the Journal for Surface Technology (JOT)

The regulations in industrial parts cleaning regarding the use of chemicals and waste disposal are becoming increasingly stricter. However, cleanliness also plays a crucial role in the quality, functionality, and lifespan of products.
In addition to describing the production and effects of plasma-treated liquids (PTL), this article also discusses their forward-looking significance for industrial parts cleaning. PBF offer an alternative to conventional chemical use due to higher environmental friendliness and sustainability. Our members are investigating their suitability for surface cleaning and present new results for cleaning processes with PTL in this article in the Journal for Surface Technology:  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s35144-025-3485-9#citeas

b.    Publication: Conference paper on Fouling and Cleaning in Food Processing 2025

Plasma-treated liquids are produced through treatment with atmospheric pressure plasma, which generates reactive nitrogen and oxygen species. These species impart antimicrobial efficacy to the liquids, making their use as disinfectants particularly significant and intensively researched in the food industry.

So far, there have been only a few studies on the effectiveness of freshly prepared PTL compared to stored plasma-treated liquids as disinfectants.

In the study conducted by our FRei members, plasma-treated liquids were produced from saline solution using an arc discharge plasma jet, and the liquid was characterized during storage. To learn about what the study revealed and the potential it ultimately holds as a disinfectant in food production, read here: https://tud.qucosa.de/landing-page/?tx_dlf%5bid%5d=https%3A%2F%2Ftud.qucosa.de%2Fapi%2Fqucosa%253A97516%2Fmets
