On January 22, there was quite a buzz in the cleaning laboratory of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP. Ten students from the master's program “Conservation and Restoration” at the University of Applied Sciences Berlin (HTW) visited Dresden for their internship. As part of their studies, they attend the lecture “Cleaning Principles and Technologies for Surface Treatment and Preservation”. In this lecture, FRei member Frank-Holm Rögner imparts his valuable knowledge about cleaning principles and the application of modern cleaning methods on fragile historical objects in subject area five “Design and Culture”.
After the lecture commenced its next round in the winter semester 2025/26, it was time for the integrated internship again. Here, the theoretical content from the lecture can be supplemented by practical experiences with cleaning processes on their own historical objects, and various cleaning methods and analytical possibilities can be tried out. In addition to the diverse options of our vacuum suction jet system and the gentle cleaning with CO2 snow jet, the industrial standard of ultrasonic cleaning and a look into analytics were, of course, essential.
All ten students successfully completed the internship in the LinTR learning laboratory.
We are pleased with the engaged participation of all students and the successful exchange of knowledge!
